In all sorts of original ways, 3D print technology is managing to support and develop discourse within cultural history, art history and museum studies. The digitisation of collections has been an important issues within such areas for many years. But only now is the true potential of 3D scanning and printing being realised – in terms of commemorating some of the most important artifacts in the world. Creating art using 3D printing is very different to preserving art using the same technology – but that’s exactly what St. Petersberg-based technology company Prixel are trying to promote. By scanning and printing some of the most memorable paintings in the world, their goal is to make the 3 dimensional oil paintings of centuries past exist as replicas all around the world.
